The Science Granting Council Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa (SGCI) is pleased to announce a call for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for collaborative, multi-country research projects that support the implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2034 (STISA-2034).
Call Details
This call operationalizes SGCI’s contribution to STISA 2034 by supporting multi-country research aligned with its priority sectors. It focuses on generating high-quality research, strengthening cross-border partnerships, and ensuring that evidence is translated into policy and practice.
By linking research investments to continental priorities and promoting collaboration across countries and sectors, SGCI seeks to accelerate the implementation of STISA 2034 and strengthen Africa’s STI ecosystem in support of inclusive and sustainable development.
Each expression of interest (EOI) will first undergo an administrative review for completeness followed by eligibility criteria, in accordance with the requirements of the relevant SGCI countries. Eligible EOIs will then be assessed against relevance with the thematic priorities. If relevance is not evident, then the EOI will be eliminated.
Only applicants whose expressions of interest are successful will be invited to submit a full technical proposal. At the full proposal stage, full proposal applications will be reviewed and short-listed by an independent peer-review committee comprised of external reviewers from different related disciplines.
As a result of this call, a series of grants in the range of CAD $50 thousand to CAD $300 thousand will be awarded to each successful consortium member through their respective national Science Granting Council. The amount awarded to each organization will vary depending on the country-specific funding limits outlined in the call document. The project duration will not exceed 36 months, including all research activities and final reporting. Review the full Call document or visit the matchmaking website to identify potential collaborators and build your research consortium.
Application Process
Applications must be received by no later than September 25, 2026 at 23:59 EDT. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
Before opening the online application portal, applicants are encouraged to assemble all the supporting documentation necessary to complete the application which is outlined in the Call document.
The consortium applying to the call must be composed of one lead applicant institution and at least two co-applicant institutions, each from participating SGCI countries (see Annex 1). These could include public research organizations (PROs), public and private universities, as well as governmental research organizations.
A maximum of five co-applicant institutions may participate, with no more than one co-applicant institution from any single country. Therefore, each co-applicant institution must represent a different participating country.
To complete an online application, click on ‘Apply’. The lead applicant organization must submit a single application on behalf of the consortium. The principal investigator of the lead applicant organization may submit only one proposal as lead, but may participate as co-applicant in other proposals.
